Octagon Magick Art Ornament (Octagon House--first in a series of ornaments)
This is the first in a series of Ornaments inspired by the book Octagon Magic by Andre Norton. I have loved this book for a long while. It was first published in 1967, and tells the story of Lorrie, an orphan from Canada who comes to live with her Aunt Margaret in America, when her Grandmother has to go abroad for an operation.
The Octagon House becomes a refuge for her in the compleatly different world in which she has to come to live. When the house is itself in danger of being destroyed, it is the lessons that Laurie learns from the house and its occupants that help her to deal with it's loss and her own personal loss.
I can't say exactly why this story means so much to me, except that it brings to life an era of history that while not so long ago, is so far away from the way we live today.
But.."Much of the magic of this world does not seem to esist because we are too blind, or too busy to look for it, Lorrie. Blindness and unbelief, those are the two foes of magic. To see and to believe--those who do have many gates to enter, if they choose."

There are a few references to the story in this ornament. And, you'll have to read the story to recognise them: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Octagon+Magic&x=0&y=0
